If even this does not, then I believe the last resort is to repair windows by re-installing winxp. It will be difficult to tell from this attachment why the search function is disabled. So I think it relates something with IE, and tried to re-install it.In my case, I just uninstall and re-install IE from "Windows component add & delete" panel, such that just check over here I have searched many forums and have tried the fixes such as registry keys; running (regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\srchui.dll); running sfc /scannow; kellys-korner help pages; etc..

I did exactly what was said, hit OK (not ENTER) after each one, each time a panel said it was successful, I rebooted and tried Search (Panel 1 in my post).
