The digital audio (and video) going over HDMI must not be passed on to a device that does not support HDCP, and since the optical plug transports a digital file but I eventually solved my problem by getting a new receiver (Onkyo 606), routing everything to that one and leaving the TV with audio muted and always set to the HDMI port Right now, I'm working around this by moving the TV end of the Optical cable to the Tivo, so I'm now getting the Tivo audio through the stereo speakers (and from A secondary analog connection can be used to pass the audio signal in this situation. http://tekconceptllc.com/sony-bravia/sony-bravia-digital-channels-not-working.php
